It’s a snowy Friday here in St. Louis. And unless Loverboy has been lying to us since 1981, “Everybody’s working for the weekend.”
But before we get down to the business of getting down, let’s set the record straight about a question we had on the LIVE Q&A coaching call yesterday.
What in the heck is hypertrophy?
It’s pronounced hi-per-troh-fee. And it’s just a fancy way of saying “building muscle.” For some reason, a lot of trainers and meatheads feel more important when they use expensive words.
It’s building muscle, you jokers. Get over yourselves.
Now, building muscle means something different to us golfers than it does to, say a professional wrestler.
We want distance, rotation, balance, endurance, injury-prevention. And all the other good stuff that comes along with getting strong.
But the common thread among us all is that we want to LOOK more muscular. Not bulky. Not shredded and veiny. But that toned look where our muscles are defined.
So, how do you get that look?
It’s a complicated 2-part process:
- Build muscle (yeah, no kidding)
- Get leaner
I have a client who shall remain nameless who we affectionately refer to his belly as “the cooler”. We know there’s a 6-pack under there, but too many cold beers keep it hidden.
Whenever I see ads for programs like 8-minute, 6-minute, 2-minute abs – whatever the ridiculous number is these days, I cringe.
That’s NOT how you get abs. You HAVE abs! You just can’t see them yet.
You also have biceps, triceps, pecs, deltoids, etc. To get toned, you need to build bigger muscles and get leaner at the same time.
If you’re already lean, then you just need to build your muscles. If you already have size, then you just need to get leaner.
We all come in different shapes and sizes. But that is the recipe to looking good.
And we haven’t even started talking about the golf benefits of hypertrophy. Yup, I just dropped a 10-cent word on you. Ahh, now I feel important:)
