đź’Ş #1 Golf Stretching Mistake Fixed

It’s Wednesday. And the sun is shining as I’m looking out of the gym to the very busy Manchester Rd.

Across the street, I watch all day as a steady line of people make their way through Taco Bell. While I do like the occasional soft taco, I’d much rather be over here.

So yesterday, we talked about how our brain’s “protective response” keeps our muscles from lengthening as we stretch. The bi-product being that your stretching doesn’t work.

Until now…

The #1 mistake that is keeping you from seeing any results is that you’re NOT HOLDING THE POSITION LONG ENOUGH. (If you prefer to not read, you can skip to 2:30 of the video

What’s happening is that your brain’s reflex is immediately fighting your body to limit how much stretch your muscle will give. In fact, you probably feel that your muscles are actually trying to contract as you’re stretching (the opposite of what you want).

Here’s the thing: it takes time to “override” that reflex and gain your brain’s trust.

Remember when we were younger. And our team would get together and stretch before games? We’d generally hold the position as we all counted out loud, ”1-2-3…..10.”

Not long enough!

We have to give the brain-muscle connection time to become friendly and relax.

Think about taffy (or Silly Putty if you want to age yourself like I’m currently doing). When it’s cold, it takes a while to get flexible. But when you give it time to warm, it’s easy to manipulate.

Great Jeff. So, am I supposed to spend my Sunday afternoon touching my toes?

Excellent question. And “no”, you do not.

Luckily, smarter people than me figured out that there is a “magic” time for your brain to release your muscle.

And just like slashing in hockey, 2 minutes is that number.

Now, before you go running to stretch your hammies for the next two minutes, you’ve got two choices:

  1. Wait for tomorrow’s email for the second piece of the puzzle (without it, you’re really wasting your time
  1. Skip ahead and watch the video I shot Monday – 3 Golf Stretching Mistakes

Your choice.

You’ve got this,
