💪 Have your cake too

Yesterday was my first day back to the real world after our trip into the woods. Luckily, it worked out much better for us than the kid from Into the Wild – excellent book, but if you like Pearl Jam, the movie’s soundtrack is top notch.

So, one of my first clients of the week, Mark, is an interesting case. And there’s a term for his “condition” that I just can’t seem to perfectly describe.

You know how some guys are skinny-fat? Meaning, they look like they’re skinny, but when they pop off their shirt at the pool, they’re pretty doughy.

Mark, on the other hand, is lean. In excellent shape. And turns the ladies’ heads at the pool.

BUT…

He is stiff as a friggin’ board. If you can come up with a catchy term we can use for golfers who are in excellent shape, but their mobility is dogs***, I will happily send you some swag. Maybe we’ll make this a contest?

Toned ‘n Tight? Frozen Fit? Creaky Shape?

Those are pretty terrible, so I’ll leave it up to you.

Yesterday, I had him get on his back to do a bridge. And he could not get his butt all the way up the air. To be fair, he doesn’t have much of a butt, so it makes sense:)

And I get where he’s coming from. We all want glamour muscles. We all want to look good around the fairer sex. And that’s great. If that’s what drives you to keep getting better, then go with it.

But, the thing with Mark is that he’s strong in a lot of the wrong places for golf. Of course, big biceps look great in a tight-sleeved shirt. But that doesn’t directly translate to success on the course.

He’s finally fed up and in the place where all fit golfers eventually find themselves…”If I’m already doing the work in the gym, I want it to ALSO help me play my best golf.”

Sound familiar?

And for Mark, that means getting strong in his Range of Motion areas. Areas like his shoulders, trunk, hips, and back.

We really can have our cake and eat it. Hell yeah, work out so you look great. So you feel great. AND to play your best golf.

Figure out where you need the help. And lean into it with everything you’ve got.

You’ve got this.
