đź’Ş How I Failed Like A Drug Addict

Happy Hump Day my fellow golf and fitness enthusiast!

This is 1000% off topic, but I remember in grade school, me and my buddies found a pencil that had “It’s Hump Day” printed on the side.

We had no idea it meant it was Wednesday and we’re over the hump for the week. Our adolescent brains immediately thought it was the dirtiest pencil we’d ever seen – not quite as cool as the naked lady pen, but still pretty great.

Ahh, to be a naive pre-pubescent again. I miss those days.

So, enough of the glory days of knowing very little about girls. This morning, I wanna put myself out there and share one of my biggest fitness failures.

It was about 5 years ago (everything seems like it was five years ago), and I was looking to lose a few pounds.

We had come across a doctor who created a program called the Metabolic Diet. It was basically a slightly modified keto, caveman, paleo, or low-carb diet. Both Ryan (our co-founder) and I had a lot of success with it when we first tried it.

Big surprise, it’s a hard diet to stick to. There’s just something unnatural about eliminating an entire macro category.

I had early success. Stopped doing it. Gained back the weight. So, of course, I went right back to it because I knew it worked.

Horrible move. Sound familiar?

Even though I knew it wasn’t a long-term solution, I was acting like a drug addict. “I’ll just do it for a while, then I’ll quit when I get to my goal and start eating normal again.”

We all know it doesn’t work that way. That is a cycle that never, ever ends.

And that’s exactly what happened. I lost the lbs and gained them right back.

But, I learned a valuable lesson that I think about almost daily.

I wish I could remember who said it to me, but this may be the best piece of advice I’ve ever gotten for long-term success:

WHATEVER GETS YOU THERE IS HOW YOU’RE GOING TO STAY THERE

Meaning, if you cut out carbs to get to your fighting weight, you’re never going to have a carb again to maintain that weight.

If weight training gets your body lean and gets the definition you want, you’re going to have to keep lifting.

If posting selfies on Instagram five times a day builds your business, then I hope you like the camera, cuz it ain’t going away.

I failed more times than I care to remember until I understood that concept. Who am I kidding? I still sometimes fall back into that pattern. It’s so hard to resist the quick fix:)

But, I’m working on it, and am figuring it out every day.

I bring it up so you can hopefully stop all the pain and heartache of the start-and-stop fitness cycle.

Find what’s enjoyable. Find what gets you out of bed. Find something you can picture yourself doing when you’re in your 80s.

And when you find it and execute, that’s when longevity effortlessly happens.

You’ve got this.

PS – Throughout the years, I’ve discovered that I like lifting weights. That’s my jam, and that’s what I know I’ll be doing for the next 40 years.
