đź’Ş Is your regular fitness workout good enough as a golf fitness workout?

Yesterday, I wrote about how the slow burn of jogging is not the best, most-efficient way to burn fat. Instead, the short bursts of weight training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) are much better options, especially if you’re strapped for time.

Boy, does that get the joggers bent out of shape. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger! I’m just reporting on what works best for our Crew.

Amidst the jogger outrage, I got this message from one of our Crew:

Is my regular fitness workout good enough to suffice for a golf fitness workout?

It’s almost an impossible question to answer because I don’t know what John considers a “regular” fitness workout, but generally speaking…

…yes and no.

Yes, because as long as you’re doing something that gets you moving and stronger, it’s going to be helpful on the course.

But here’s the thing: when we talk about a â€śgolf fitness” workout, I assume it’s a workout that is specifically designed for us golfers to improve our game.

In that case, the answer is NO. P90X will help you play better golf just by the fact that you’re getting stronger.

However, generic workouts for the masses don’t focus on the golf areas we need to strengthen, or do a great job at increasing our mobility. Areas like our shoulders, hips, neck, trunk, ankles, and so on.

When trainers put together programs, they aren’t focused on the things us golfers love, want and need:

Mobility

Speed

Power

Distance

Balance

Stamina

Stability

Rotation

Energy

It’s kinda like you and me trying to pass the bar exam without going to law school. Sure, we took a few law classes in high school, so we’ll get lucky and get a few questions right.

But, we don’t have depth to pass the entire exam.

Same with general fitness programs. Yeah, they’ll touch lightly on a few golf areas, but without the golf focus, we won’t see the leaps and bounds we do when we train with a purpose.

That’s clearly the long answer, but I can type really, really fast:)

My unsolicited advice is this: If you want the hard work you do in the gym to translate into high-performance on the course, find a golf trainer or a program built specifically for golfers.

PS – You didn’t think I was gonna skip recommending the 18STRONG App, did you? I’d have to be crazy.

There are some reputable golf trainers out there, so find the one you like and stick with him/her. The worst thing you can do is jump around to the next shiny object.

If I’ve fooled you and you think I know what I’m talking about, then you may want to check out the 18STRONG App🙂 It’s free for the first 7 days, and I’m willing to bet there’s a program that’s gonna click for you.

Also, tomorrow is our LIVE Q&A, so you can check the app out now, then ask away tomorrow. You don’t wanna miss it.
