Listen to Teddy Roosevelt

Happy Hump Day from a beautiful, sunny St. Louis morning!

Golfers around the world are settling in for the off-season or season, depending upon where you land relative to the equator.

Which means a lot of new habits are being created, so over the next few days, we decided to identify some of the common “derailments” that can trip up the best of us.

Strap yourself in because today’s is a biggie:

The Comparison Pitfall

Theodore Roosevelt is credited with saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

And thanks to social media, comparing ourselves with others is simpler than ever. In fact, you don’t even have to try anymore – it’s constantly in your face…

  • Once in a lifetime golf trips
  • Shiny new Lamborghinis
  • 6-pack abs

It looks like everyone is living a much better life than we are.

But remember, we’re all on our own journey.

You may have just picked up your first dumbbell in 25 years. Or, took your first lesson. Or, have plateaued with your fitness.

Comparing where you are compared to anybody else is apples to oranges – you really don’t know what’s going on.

Quick story: My daughter has a friend who lives in a beautiful home on a beautiful lot in one of the nicest parts of town. The dad owns a wildly successful investing business. The kids go to the best schools in town. The entire family all drive new cars.

They are living the American Dream…but they aren’t.

My daughter came to me a few weeks ago, and told me, “Betty’s dad (fake name, of course) is bad again.”

You see, her dad is an alcoholic who has been in and out of rehab for years. They can’t keep any alcohol in the house. And when he’s off the wagon, the kids either hide in their rooms or leave the house completely.

Now, if you didn’t know this, you would think they are living a perfect life. Heck, I’ve met the guy on multiple occasions and had zero idea.

I share this story to illustrate the point to:

Focus on YOUR progress and celebrate YOUR victories.

Your journey is about becoming the best version of YOU, not trying to keep up with anybody else.

Now, let’s do this!
