The greenskeeper’s fitness “secret”

So, it’s almost fall which means the bluegrass is starting to explode out of the ground, and repair the fairways from a brutally dry summer here in St. Louis. 

Our co-founder Ryan is an absolute nut when it comes to his lawn – it looks like a fairway.  

If he’s outside, almost everyone who walks by comments. 

If he’s inside, he’s caught a number of people kneeling down to see if it’s real. 

He told me the a number of UPS/Amazon/USPS drivers have told him, “No way, that’s real.” 

And he has admitted that he is insane about it.   

So, one of my clients asked him while we were all playing golf one day, “What do you do to get it to look like that?” 

Of course, he has a regimen of fertilizers and will spray out some weeds, but he said something that has always stuck with me… 

“The most important thing I do is that I mow it a lot. When it’s really growing, I cut 3-4 times per week.” 

What I didn’t know is that the more you mow grass, the more it wants to grow.  

And the stronger and thicker it grows. 

And it made me think about how success is often just about… 

Repeating the simplest stuff over and over and over. 

The biggest mistake I see most people make is they will often over-emphasize acquiring new information (Youtube, Golf Digest, Golf Channel, etc.) over repeating what they already know. 

Let’s say you want to get into better shape – which I’m sure is why you’re here:) 

The best thing you can do is to exercise a little (but consistently) and eat somewhat right (80-20 Rule). 

For most of us, that’s going to be more than enough.  

As long as we keep repeating it. (Much like Ryan repeatedly mows his lawn.) 

And hey, I am far from perfect.  

If you think I don’t miss workouts or indulge in IPAs and delicious foods, you’re crazy. 

BUT, what works for me and our Crew is to do the right things most of the time – the 80/20 or 90/10 rule, depending on your goals. 

Keep. It. Simple.
