The progress “sweet spot”

Happy start to the new week! It’s a beautiful day to start moving your needle in a great direction.

But, before you start dominating, I want to tell you about two golfers I completely made up to help ensure we’re all moving in the right direction.

Now, they are made up, but they embody 99% of people I’ve worked with, talked to, and read about over the past two decades.

The first golfer is Tom.

He wants to lose 15lbs and increase his driving distance by 15 yards. He’s been following 18STRONG for years, so he understands that small changes are the key to building habits.

Again, he listens to me and starts drinking 24 oz of water every morning as his first habit to build.

In three months, Tom is drinking water every morning without even thinking about it. It’s totally automatic, which is great…

BUT, he hasn’t made any progress on his two goals.

He never adjusted his workouts or his nutrition, so didn’t see any meaningful change in his weight or driving distance.

The second golfer is Jerry.

He also wants to lose weight and drive the ball farther. He just finished listening to the Joe Rogan podcast with David Goggins, so he decides he is going all-in on a 5am, 2-hour workout every single day. And he’s going to restrict his calories to 1,000 per day.

Jerry has never worked out. And loves sleeping in.

After a week or so, he burns himself out – too much, too soon.

So, what’s going on with these two guys?

They broke a golden rule: In order for us to make progress, we have to pick goals that are both meaningful and manageable.

Manageable – we can do it consistently and sustainably.
Meaningful – our efforts create results.

Too much of one and not enough of the other, and we end up burned out or frustrated at our lack of progress.

The trick is to find the sweet spot.

I tend to focus too much on the “meaningful”, and get burned out, so I have to constantly reel myself back towards the “manageable” side of the equation.

Today, sit down and find the sweet spot for your goals which is both manageable and meaningful.
