Welcome to another Monday – the perfect day to start a new workout routine, nutrition plan, sleep habit, or whatever change you’ve been putting off.
Now, the reality of starting something new means that some other part of your life is going to suffer.
And that’s okay.
Despite what we are bombarded with on the internet, no matter how “optimized” and “efficient” we build our lives, we cannot do it all.
Do these sound familiar…
- A life “hack” to increase your productivity 10x!
- A “revolutionary” workout that only takes 7 minutes per day!
- Get more done in less time if you know THIS secret!
The problem is that we have jobs, families, friends, golf. So, it doesn’t matter if we’re the Michael Jordan of time-schedule-productivity, life always gets in the way of even the best laid plans.
Life is a series of tradeoffs.
If you want 6-pack abs, no more beer for you.
If you want to play more golf on the weekends, you’ll see less of your family.
If you want to get more sleep, then no more binge sessions of Yellowstone until 3am.
So, I was just introduced to this concept…
STRATEGIC UNDERACHIEVMENT
As defined by Oliver Burkeman in his book Four Thousand Weeks:
You’ll inevitably end up underachieving at something, simply because your time and energy are finite. But the great benefit of strategic underachievement—that is, nominating in advance whole areas of life in which you won’t expect excellence of yourself—is that you focus that time and energy more effectively.
In other words, when you are trying to change some part of your life like starting a new workout plan or building a new habit, you need to decide which parts of your life are going to suffer…at least for a while.
Rather than juggling everything and making little progress, we make progress by being focused on a few tasks.
Sorry to all the guru coaches out there who think we can do it all…you’re wrong.
Our time is finite, so we need to decide what we want to be good at. And what we’re okay sucking at (great grammar, huh?).

PS – If you’re okay at sucking at something for 5-8 minutes a day, then I would take that time to simply do the Daily Motion in the 18STRONG Membership.
If it’s been a minute since you’ve gotten in the gym, the Daily Motion will give you a quick win that actually makes a huge difference on the course. Do it for seven days – pretty good. Do it for 30 straight days – game changer.
