Earlier this week, Happy Gilmore’s caddy shared that he underwent his second back surgery in just over two years.
So, that closes the book on his 2025 season – a darn shame, because he is fun to watch.
His re-herniated discs following the PGA Championship are an unfortunate reminder that even elite athletes are vulnerable to, what “they” are calling, an overuse injury.
A golf swing is a violent motion for anybody.
Not only is it violent, but it’s repetitive.
Those are two very big strikes against us.
So, what can we do to minimize our risk?
(Unless we stop playing, we’ll never eliminate the risk)
The common “wisdom” is that injury-prevention is about avoiding pain…
…it’s really about building a resilient body that can handle the demands of the game for years to come.
Here’s how you can start:
1. Prioritize Core Stability
A strong, stable core is essential for protecting your spine during the golf swing. Exercises like side planks, bird dogs, and anti-rotation drills can help.
2. Train for Mobility and Strength
Golf requires a delicate balance of flexibility and power. Incorporate dynamic warm-ups, thoracic spine mobility drills, and strength training to support your swing mechanics to help reduce injury risk.
3. Listen to Your Body
Discomfort is a signal—not a challenge to push through.
Zalatoris said his back discomfort worsened over time, ultimately leading to surgery. Early intervention can prevent minor issues from becoming major setbacks.
And no, I’m not saying Willy Z. did anything wrong, or could have prevented his back troubles.
He’s not my patient.
The good news is that he is super optimistic about his recovery.
The kid is only 28, so I assume he’s going to have a long, successful career ahead of him.
So, let’s use his experience to serve as motivation to invest in our own health and longevity on and off the course.
STAY STRONG,
Jeff
