Happy Tuesday, my fellow golf and fitness enthusiast.
Yesterday, my son’s soccer coach asked the boys a great question that kept me up a little last night. And I’m so excited to share it with you b/c I know you’ll noodle on it with some real mental energy (feel free to send me your thoughts)…
Do you want to have fun doing something or do you want to do something that is rewarding?
Boom! Mind blown.
We can apply this just about anything in our lives.
I believe things that are rewarding last forever, while things that are fun last for the rest of the day.
Let me give you a couple examples:
I enjoy working out, but I don’t think I’ve ever described it as fun. BUT, the sense of accomplishment I feel at the end of a workout and seeing my results is truly rewarding.
Was it fun to go through two-a-days, pre-season training for soccer? Hell no! But being in the best condition of my life was very rewarding, especially in the last minutes of a tie game.
Chipping and putting in the front yard for an hour is fun-ish, but the real reward is on the course when you hear that ball drop in the hole.
Here’s the difference: Rewarding experiences happen when you go through things that aren’t necessarily fun, in order to achieve results that often times exceed your expectations. The blood, sweat, and tears are rarely fun, but man are they rewarding.
We live in a society that preaches and promotes immediate gratification. And as time goes on, I see words like “sacrifice”, “commitment” and “trust” slowly becoming obsolete.
I would have a hard time arguing that working out is fun. BUT, I will fight until my last breath that it is extremely rewarding.
And rewarding experiences, in the end, become the most valuable experiences of our lives!
