You know I like to keep things stupidly simple.
So, I fought tracking my nutrition for a long time.
I don’t want to weigh my food.
I don’t want to let the nutrition label run my life.
I don’t want to feel guilty about treating myself to a few cold suds.
But, I finally let my curiosity win.
And tracked my nutrition all of January.
I figured the worst-case scenario, I would get a better understanding of how much I’m actually eating as I get through my 40-Day Forge.
Couldn’t hurt, right?
Okay, so I used the 1stPhorm App.
And it was actually much simpler than I thought because it only tracks our macros:
- Calories
- Protein
- Carbs
- Fat
You enter your target weight, it makes the calculations for you, then you enter everything you eat for the day.
After 30 days, here’s what I learned:
- I wish I had done this years ago.
- It’s easy to enter the food you’re eating into the app, especially since we all kind of have a rotation of the meals we usually eat (there is ZERO weighing food).
- I was waaaay off (too low) on the amount of protein we need (1g per every pound of your ideal weight).
- Hitting my macros numbers kept me feeling full.
- My diet had a noticeable effect on my body composition – I can tell in the mirror that my arms and shoulders look bigger.
- On weekends, it was easy to adjust my lunch or dinner macros to account for a few mocktails (I was no alcohol) so I could still hit my macros.
- Keeping track became a game – I would constantly try to hit all four macro numbers on the nose. I said some version of this most days, “I’ve got X carbs to give, so I’m gonna crush [delicious food].
- I ate much cleaner and healthier so I wouldn’t screw up my score – again, it became a game.
- I lost a few lbs.
- I’m kind of addicted to using the app. Hey, there are a lot worse things to be addicted to!
Again, we use 1st Phorm’s App, which I highly recommend ($5/mo if you pay for the entire year).
My big takeaway: I cannot stress how big of a game-changer tracking our macros is.
And what a huge difference it makes.
STAY STRONG,
Jeff
