What happened to our food?

As we’ve been pretty well snowed in since Saturday morning, I’ve had a lot of time to mindlessly sit in front of the boob tube.

I came across a documentary series on Paramount+ called “America in Color”.

Basically, they’ve added color to videos and photos of watershed moments in history…

…WWII, Vietnam, Woodstock, the moon landing, etc…

And what I always notice is how fit most of the people are.

No kidding, do a search of Google images for “Woodstock 1969” and tell me the percentage of people who look overweight.

Especially compared to almost half of our current population.

Why is that?

I blame a ton of it on our food.

For example, let’s take a look at Wonder Bread.

When we were kids, here were the ingredients:

Wheat flour, water, sugar, yeast, salt, milk, and butter.

Seven recognizable ingredients that we can wrap our brains around.

And here is the modern-day Wonder Bread:

Enriched bleach flour, water, high fructose corn syrup, yeast, soybean oil, salt, wheat gluten, vinegar, and calcium proplonate as a preservative, monoglycerides, dicalcalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, ammonium sulffate, soldium stearoyl lactylate, calcium carbonate, DATEM, soy lecithin.

Don’t know about you, but we have very few of those ingredients in our kitchen.

You ever have a PB&J on fresh Wonder Bread?

It’s amazing!

Or, it used to be.

Now, it doesn’t even cross my wife’s mind to buy Wonder Bread.

So, as January is coming to a close, let’s all do our best to be conscious of the stuff we’re putting into our bodies.

Because as we all know, fat is mostly lost in the kitchen.

STAY STRONG,

Jeff

PS – Here’s a great exercise to become aware of what you’re putting into your body, not just what you think (they are NEVER the same)…

Use the 1stPhorm App for the month of February to track your nutrition – don’t worry, you won’t have to weigh anything.

It has a lot of great features I know I should use, but I really only use it to track my macros (fat, calories, carbs, protein).

When I first started tracking, I quickly realized I wasn’t getting nearly enough protein.

And I was missing the mark by a lot.

So, give it a shot for a month.

And we’d love to hear about your biggest surprise.
