Most people think we work out to get in shape.
And maybe for the next two minutes, you may also think that.
But, that’s just the surface-level answer.
The real reasons run way deeper.
Here are four levels of emotional desire that we don’t always realize are happening in the background when we work out:
- 1st Order Emotional Benefits: The immediate rush of sweating and feeling accomplished after a workout.
- 2nd Order Emotional Benefits: The confidence boost from seeing progress — stronger, leaner, faster.
- 3rd Order Emotional Benefits: The sense of community — belonging to a group (like 18STRONG) that motivates us.
- 4th Order Emotional Benefits: A bigger life transformation — feeling like a better, healthier version of ourselves. An identity shift.
So, how can we apply this to our lives?
Next time you want to work out, and you’re not feeling it, try this:
Before you start, and depending upon where you are in your journey…
…pick one of these emotional benefits and focus on it.
Whether it’s confidence, connection, or identity — you’ll be amazed how much more motivated and intentional your session feels.
Because when you train with purpose, the results go far beyond just getting in shape.
STAY STRONG,
Jeff
