The 4 emotional benefits of working

Most people think we work out to get in shape.

And maybe for the next two minutes, you may also think that.

But, that’s just the surface-level answer.

The real reasons run way deeper.

Here are four levels of emotional desire that we don’t always realize are happening in the background when we work out:

  • 1st Order Emotional Benefits: The immediate rush of sweating and feeling accomplished after a workout.
  • 2nd Order Emotional Benefits: The confidence boost from seeing progress — stronger, leaner, faster.
  • 3rd Order Emotional Benefits: The sense of community — belonging to a group (like 18STRONG) that motivates us.
  • 4th Order Emotional Benefits: A bigger life transformation — feeling like a better, healthier version of ourselves. An identity shift.

So, how can we apply this to our lives?

Next time you want to work out, and you’re not feeling it, try this:

Before you start, and depending upon where you are in your journey…

…pick one of these emotional benefits and focus on it.

Whether it’s confidence, connection, or identity — you’ll be amazed how much more motivated and intentional your session feels.

Because when you train with purpose, the results go far beyond just getting in shape.

STAY STRONG,

Jeff
