10 Things I learned tracking my nutrition in January

I like to keep things stupidly simple, so I fought tracking my nutrition for so long.

I don’t want to weigh my food.

I don’t want to let the nutrition label run my life.

I don’t want to feel guilty about treating myself to a few cold suds.

But, I finally let peer-pressure win.

And have been using a tracking app all month.

I figured the worst-case scenario, I would get a better understanding of how much I’m actually eating as I try to lose a few pounds.

Couldn’t hurt, right?

Okay, so the app was actually much simpler than I thought because it only tracks our macros:

CaloriesProteinCarbsFatYou enter your target weight, it makes the calculations for you, then you enter everything you eat for the day.

After 30 days, here’s what I learned:

I wish I had done this years ago. It’s easy to enter the food you’re eating into the app, especially since we all kind of have a rotation of the meals we usually eat (there is ZERO weighing food).I was waaaay off (too low) on the amount of protein we need (1g per every pound of your ideal weight).Hitting my macros numbers kept me feeling full.My diet had a noticeable effect on my body composition – I can tell in the mirror that my arms and shoulders look bigger. On weekends, it was easy to adjust my lunch or dinner macros to account for a few cocktails so I could still hit my macros.Keeping track became a game – I would constantly try to hit all four macro numbers on the nose. I said some version of this most days, “I’ve got X carbs to give, so I’m gonna crush [delicious food].I ate much cleaner and healthier so I wouldn’t screw up my score – again, it became a game.I lost 3 lbs. Went from 176lbs of holiday weight to 173lbs of dynamite:)I’m kind of addicted to using the app. Hey, there are a lot worse things to be addicted! Here’s a screenshot of my day so far (need to up the protein and carbs):

As you can see, it’s super-simple to keep track.

We use the 1st Phorm App, which I highly recommend.

And I’m told that, for the month of February, new customers get 30 days free access to the app when you buy something.

So, I’ve taken the liberty to help you game the system.

You can buy a glow in the dark shaker bottle for $12.99, which means you’ve already covered 30 days of the app (also $12.99), but now you’ve got a free bottle.

What a deal!

Now, if you need any supplements or protein, I recommend the daily nutrient pack and the chocolate milkshake whey protein.

Whether you game the system or not, I cannot stress how big of a game-changer tracking our macros is.
And what a huge difference it makes.

Alright, I’ve got to hop on the exercise bike and finish watching Springsteen on Broadway – not sure why I waited so long to do that either?

Hit ‘em straight,
Ryan
