Happy Day #1 of the PGA Championship (I love major weekends). In the event you’re recording it, I will keep my comments to myself.
However, I ain’t keeping the BIG 5 movements for golfers to myself:
So far this week, we’ve covered why the first three are so vitally essential to your game. So today, let’s get into, by far, the most popular category golfers ask me about:
Obviously, we rotate in our golf swing, so this one seems self-explanatory, but lemme really go to bat for the importance of including a rotation exercise in your workouts and give you one of my favorites:
Improvement in Swing Power and Distance: Rotational exercises help develop core stability and strength, both of which are crucial for generating swing power. The more robust and stable the your rotation, the greater your swing speed.
Injury Prevention: Because golf requires a repetitive motion that puts a ton of stress on your spine and other body parts, a steady diet of rotational exercises helps you build a strong, flexible core that reduces the risk of injury and minimizes stress on your lower back (a very common injury area).
Enhanced Balance and Stability: The rotational movement in golf isn’t just about power. It’s also about control. Strong rotational muscles improve your balance and stability during your swing. Strong rotation helps you maintain a better position through your entire swing, which leads to…you guessed it, more accuracy.
So, one of favorite exercises to use with our golfers is a Cable Rotation. Here’s the proper way to do them:
- Stand side-on to a cable machine (or resistance band), holding the handle with both hands, arms extended straight in front of your chest.
- Keeping your arms straight and core engaged, rotate your torso away from the machine (wall), using your back foot to pivot.
- Slowly return to the starting position, maintaining control throughout.
If you can do 3 sets of 10 really, really good reps where you’re challenged, but still in control, you’ve got it!
So, tomorrow we’ll wrap up the BIG 5. Keep a look out.
