Responsibility…The Ultimate Freedom

Last week, my son was late for school, and gave me the same old story…

“It wasn’t my fault!”

There was a fender bender on the highway that had traffic backed up like a clogged sink.

He didn’t want to hear it, but I told him, “It is your fault.

You could have left earlier. You can always leave early to make sure you’re never late.”

Now, I don’t expect him to leave for school an hour early every morning, but I wanted him to get this point:

Life becomes free when we accept responsibility for the position we’re in.

How fit we are.

How our careers are going.

How our checkbooks look.

How our golf indexes are moving.

All of it is a reflection of the habits we have built over our lives.

Inputs and outputs.

It’s not the government’s fault.

It’s not our spouses’ fault.

It’s certainly not the Amazon truck that rear-ended the mini-van during rush hour’s fault.

It’s because of the decisions we’ve made.

And whether or not those decisions were good or bad.

I’m certainly not perfect, but when I came to this realization years ago, the stress started to melt away.

It’s waaaay less exhausting to take ownership than have to search for someone or something to blame.

STAY STRONG,

Jeff
